Canadian winter 2020

For most of January and February, we have mostly been back at work and avoiding going outside in the cold and wet. Vancouver had 30 days straight of rain, this broke a 50 year old record – we don’t mind all of the rain though because rain = snow up in the mountains! I wish we could send some of the rain back to Australia somehow though.

Apart from work we have been skiing at every opportunity. Including post work night skiing at Cypress mountain which is a 40min drive from downtown. This is a smaller mountain but still loads of fun – Ellen has been learning to snowboard at Cypress. A few long sessions later and a lot of bruises she can now get down blue runs and rip a few turns in.

We have also been driving up to Whistler to hit the slopes every weekend. It is around a 2 hour drive from our place so we leave at 5:45am to get close to the front for first chair – standard Justin style! I hate crowds but there is no escaping them in Whistler. Lucky there is so much terrain!

The weekend just gone the weather was probably the best we have ever had. It snowed on Friday and there was high winds so the resort closed most of the mountain. We went up Saturday and there was blue sky’s and powder! It was so much fun, we had to stop and think a few times how lucky we are to experience those conditions.

The weather was so good, we decided to also go up to ski on Sunday. Lots of driving, early mornings and sore bodies but it was well worth it! We skied with our friend Mick (also an Aussie), he is a pretty handy snowboarder and he thought we were good enough to start doing some tree/shute runs. We did this for most of the day on Sunday without much of an issue, but on the last run of the day we went down one, and it went on, and on, and on… it got steep, we had to dodge creeks and holes. Eventually we admitted we were lost and had to hike towards the sunlight – we made it, what felt like 40 minutes later! We might steer clear of that tree run next time #deathbymick

Looks like spring skiing is almost here. Forecast is showing blue sky’s for the next week or so. Very excited to get back out there!
