Huacachina, Peru

Day 83

Another yucky 16 hour bus ride, we made it to a city in Peru called Ica. There isn’t much to do in the city itself, and the main tourist attraction here is a small Oasis town amongst some sand dunes called Huacachina, pronounced woca-chee-na.

We caught a 20 minute cab straight out to Huacachina and checked into our hostel. I started laughing when I saw the town for the first time, it is so random and only hostels & bars exist here.

Our hostel has a bar and pool so we did nothing all day except relax and eat. In the late afternoon we went for a dune buggy ride & sandboarding which was loads of fun. Ellen was stoked she got to see another sunset.

For the night we ate at the restaurant in the hostel. We met a Canadian guy from Nova Scotia, I found this pretty funny. I saw the place on a map once, it is in the middle of nowhere!

Day 84

We had a bit of a sleep in, had some breakfast and then decided to climb up the mammoth sand dune which sits over the town. Man was it tough, such a long way up. On the way Ellen got stitched up by an American guy who asked her to take photos of him. She had to take like 40 photos until he was happy. After every pose he would look at the photo and then tell her what he didn’t like about it and then ask her to try a different angle. I was laughing a lot – #nuffiesofinstagram.

After a 30 minute hike we made it to the top! It is an obvious place for tourists, but it is super cool. A literal Oasis in the middle of nowhere. We ran down the dunes super fast and back to our hostel to relax more by the pool.

We had a bite to eat at the hostel for lunch and then left Huacachina to the bus station. Today we are heading to Huaraz, another 12 hour haul! Luckily we have a break in Lima to change buses and stretch the legs.

We both slept the entire way, happy days!
